The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has secured 28 council seats ahead of the upcoming local council elections.
Following the deadline for applications for the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, the EC released the names of candidates elected unopposed. This occurred in constituencies where the number of applicants matched the number of available seats, or where candidates remained unopposed after withdrawals prior to the official announcement and draw of lots.
Of the 28 council seats secured by the PNC, several include Council President positions across various islands.

From the Maldivian Democratic Party, Shujau Adam secured the position of Council President for AA. Bodufolhudhoo.
The Adhaalath Party’s Hassan Shuaib was elected unopposed as a Council Member for R. Kinolhas.
Three independent candidates also secured council seats. Nuha Ali Zahir won the women’s seat in Sh. Maroshi, Mohamed Yasir secured a Council Member seat in Adh. Hangnaameedhoo, and Aminath Nadeefa was elected to the women’s seat in L. Kalaidhoo.
Regarding the Women’s Development Committees, the PNC secured 42 seats. The MDP won five seats, while the Adhaalath Party secured one seat. Two independent candidates also secured WDC seats.
The council elections are scheduled to be held on 4 April.
