New Delhi police have temporarily detained India's main opposition coalition leader, Rahul Gandhi, along with several other prominent opposition figures, amid ongoing unrest sparked by allegations of police brutality against students protesting over leaked exam papers.
Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi, and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav were detained while staging a sudden sit-in protest near Lok Kalyan Marg, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence and office are located.
The opposition leaders mounted the protest to demand the resignations of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Prime Minister Modi, following accusations that police used excessive force and assaulted students during demonstrations over the NEET exam paper leaks. Rahul Gandhi declared that no matter how much force the government uses, it cannot halt the movement to secure justice for the students.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that after the government agreed to hold discussions with opposition leaders and debate the issue in parliament, Rahul Gandhi imposed new conditions by demanding the education minister's resignation. The government claimed this was a deliberate move to block dialogue and prolong the protests.
The police forcibly removed the opposition leaders and held them at Chhatrasal Stadium and various police stations before releasing them later. Despite the detentions, students and opposition figures across India continue to take to the streets to protest against the government.
The incident has disrupted proceedings in the Indian parliament and further intensified tensions between the government and the opposition coalition.
