Under the government’s policy to cut state spending, the President’s Office has announced that 205 political appointees have so far been removed from posts across various ministries and agencies. The move is among steps being taken to streamline government operations and reduce expenditure.
Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Mohamed Hussein Shareef, said those dismissed include state ministers and deputy ministers, as well as people who held posts as senior political directors and political directors. The changes have been made across 15 government ministries.
He noted that the exercise is not yet fully complete, and that efforts to reduce the number of political appointees will continue in the coming days. Further changes to this figure should therefore be expected going forward, he said.
The government also says it is taking special steps to cut spending at state-owned companies and keep staffing at an appropriate level. The spokesperson said details of staff reductions at companies will also be made public once that work is finished.
