President Dr. Muizzu has invited the British Prime Minister to begin official consultations between the United Kingdom and the Maldives on the sovereignty of Folhavahi (Chagos).
The proposal for such talks between the two countries forms part of the government's ongoing efforts to protect Maldives' interests in the dispute over Folhavahi's sovereign authority. Officials have stressed the importance of the Maldives formally presenting its position on the issue and of both sides engaging in dialogue.
The consultations are intended to address the matter on the basis of the legal and historical rights the Maldives holds in relation to regional peace and sovereign rights. The invitation also underscores the need for Maldives' concerns to be taken into account in international decisions linked to the issue.
The government is giving priority to advancing diplomatic engagement with foreign parties to safeguard the Maldives' territorial integrity and maritime sovereignty. High-level consultations of this kind with the British government are expected to help secure a lasting solution.
