Housing Minister Dr. Abdullah Muththalib has said that writings circulating on social media claiming a plot of land was sold illegally in Hulhumalé Phase Two relate to an elderly person who has gone 23 years without receiving justice.
According to a Housing Ministry office memo that went public on social media, a 1,250-square-foot plot in Hulhumalé was sold at a rate of MVR 375 per square foot. The total price of the plot is MVR 468,750. The memo states that after an advance of MVR 50,000 was paid, arrangements were made for the remaining amount to be paid within five years.
Responding on X to criticism directed at the government and the party that received the land after the memo circulated, the minister said people were circulating an office memo related to payment and interpreting its meaning in the crudest way. He also noted that besides harming an innocent employee, harm was also being done to an elderly person who has spent 23 years advocating for justice.
Providing further details on the matter, the ministry said the decision was taken to deliver justice in a long-running issue that began under previous governments and for which no solution had been found.
