The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has said that full control and authority over the international commercial port being developed at Thilafushi will rest with the Maldivian government, and that no foreign country or party will be given priority in running the port.
The ministry said relocating Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi is an important project the government is advancing as a priority to expand the Maldives’ trade and economic sector. All operations and management of the port will proceed with the national interest first, under the oversight of the Maldivian state.
Rejecting claims that control of the port is being handed to various foreign parties, the government said the project is a port designed to benefit Maldivian citizens and businesses as much as possible. Once port works are complete, cargo loading and unloading will be faster than now, and the logistics sector will see major progress.
In addition, with the start of services at the new port, job opportunities for Maldivian employees will increase, and new business opportunities will open up for Maldivian companies, the ministry said. The Maldivian government’s aim is to safeguard the country’s economic independence and provide citizens with modern port services.
