Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Iran’s Islamic Republic was “very close” to collapse, as the six-month West Asia conflict intensified and Tehran’s Revolutionary Guards set out conditions for ending the war with the United States.
Speaking to Israeli troops on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, Netanyahu said Israel’s “main task” remained bringing down what he called Iran’s “terror regime,” and that he expected the wider regional alliance supporting Tehran to eventually fall apart.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the war could end if Washington halted military action and threats, Israel withdrew from Lebanon, the blockade of Yemen ended, about $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets were released, and there was a pledge not to interfere in Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes.
Escalating attacks have also driven oil prices higher. Brent crude rose nearly 3% to $100.72 a barrel early Wednesday after the US military said it had struck five Iranian tankers following attempted missile attacks on a US Navy warship, while Houthi attacks sparked fires at Saudi oil facilities. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which carried roughly a fifth of global oil supplies before the war, remains heavily disrupted.
