The winners of the Maldives’ first “Engineers Award”, introduced to recognise the contribution of engineers, were presented with their awards last night.
President Dr. Muizzu graced the special ceremony at Baselo Hotel and handed over the awards to the recipients.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Construction, the award was launched to raise professional standards in the engineering field and to recognise those who have made notable contributions to national service. Recipients were selected by a specialised technical committee under rigorous criteria.
At the ceremony, the most prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on three figures who have served the engineering field for many years.
They are former STELCO Managing Director Abdush Shakoor Solih, who served the electricity sector for nearly 50 years; the late Ahmed Mahreen, who led major projects in urban development for more than 40 years; and the late Mohamed Rasheed, who served STELCO for more than 50 years, rising from apprentice to CEO.
The Engineer of the Year award went to Dr. Furugaan Ibrahim, who holds a PhD in the energy field and is General Manager of Risk and Compliance at MWSC. The Women in Engineering Award was won by Asraar, the Maldives’ first woman chartered civil engineer.
Mohamed Zidhaan Hassan received the Young Engineer Award, while Hussain Jawshan, who is studying mechanical engineering in Malaysia, won the Student Innovator Award.
Among awards given to companies and projects, MWSC received the Sustainability Champion Award for a desalination project that uses solar power and advanced battery technology to cut carbon emissions.
MWSC’s Integrated Utility Services project in R. Dhuvaafaru, which provides clean drinking water, sewerage, waste management and renewable energy, received the Community Impact Award.
President Dr. Muizzu announced that such an award would be presented in his speech on Engineers’ Day, marked for the first time at national level on 30 August 2025 in connection with the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge.
