Heavy rains sweeping across parts of the Maldives have flooded more than 70 homes in Feydhoo, Addu City, causing significant damage. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said one family whose home was left uninhabitable has been moved to temporary shelter.
NDMA also reported flooding at two homes in Maradhoo. In Feydhoo, the household of eight people was relocated after conditions deteriorated to the point that essential needs could no longer be met.
Roads in Addu City have been underwater amid the ongoing rains. Flooding has also been reported across a large area of Fuvahmulah, while heavy showers continue in parts of Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls and some islands in the central Maldives.
Security forces, police, island councils and residents are continuing flood-clearance work in affected areas, and efforts are under way to build sandbag barriers to keep water out of homes and businesses.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that rough weather is likely to continue across parts of the country over the next 24 hours. Relevant agencies have urged the public to take care when travelling by sea and to guard against flood-related damage.
