The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said a further nine homes in Addu City were reported flooded today, as heavy rains continue across the Maldives and no lasting solution has yet been found to the flooding in the city.
Feydhoo in Addu City has been the worst hit in this bout of rain, with more than 70 homes flooded. Conditions in one of those homes became so severe that the family living there has been provided with temporary shelter.
According to NDMA, meal arrangements have been put in place for three days for three households where cooking has become difficult because of the flooding. Temporary shelter and meal services for three days have also been provided to the family whose home was left uninhabitable. Beyond Addu, Fuvahmulah has also reported broken bathroom pipes in some homes after heavy rain and flooding, and Fenaka, the island council and other organisations are working together to assist affected families.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service forecast as of 18:00 today, rain is expected across much of the country, with heavy showers and thunder likely over some islands. Winds of 13 to 23 miles per hour are forecast for the central Maldives and northern atolls, while winds of around 40 miles per hour are possible over open sea, the Met Office said.
