During President Dr. Muizzu’s ongoing official visit to Malaysia, the Malaysian government has in principle agreed to arrange a USD 100 million financial facility for the Maldives. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the commitment.
The move follows a request from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) for such a facility through Malaysia’s central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia. After high-level talks between the two countries’ leaders, the pledge was set out in a joint media statement.
Prime Minister Anwar said Bank Negara Malaysia and the MMA would complete the remaining technical work as soon as possible to put the agreement into practice. He noted that arrangements of this kind reflect the mutual trust and longstanding friendship between the two countries.
Alongside discussions on the financial assistance during President Dr. Muizzu’s visit, important understandings were also signed to further strengthen ties in defence and Islamic affairs.
