The Prosecutor General's Office of the Maldives and China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) today signed an agreement on training and research for prosecutors.
The signing ceremony was held at SPP headquarters in Beijing. Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef signed for the Maldives, while China's Prosecutor General Ying Yong signed for China.
Before the signing, the two prosecutor generals held official talks. According to the PG's Office, the discussions covered digital transformation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in prosecution work.
Under the agreement, a framework has been set out to facilitate professional research and training opportunities for prosecutors. The PG's Office said the two sides will also be able to expand cooperation and assistance in other areas they agree on.
The office said the new agreement renews and replaces a cooperation agreement signed between the two offices in May 2017. Deputy Prosecutors General and senior officials from both offices took part in the talks. From the Maldives, Deputy Prosecutors General Mahmood Saleem and Aishath Mohamed attended.
Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef arrived in Beijing on 13 September 2026 at the invitation of China's SPP. The official visit is due to conclude on 18 September 2026, the PG's Office said.
