The People's National Congress (PNC) Upper Council has unanimously passed a resolution calling on party president and President of the Republic Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to contest a second presidential term.
The resolution, tabled by member Abdullah Ibrahim at a meeting chaired by party chairperson Abdulla Rahim Abdullah, was approved with the full support of the 1,119 members present. Vice President Al-Usthaz Hussain Mohamed Latheef also endorsed the resolution.
According to the text, since assuming office in 2023, President Dr. Muizzu has carried out work of which the country and the public can be proud. It cites safeguarding Maldives' independence and sovereignty, strengthening the capacity to manage the country's maritime territory, and ensuring that no foreign military force remains on Maldivian soil. The resolution also highlights progress under the "Maldives for Maldivians" vision, putting the economy on a stable path, and taking financially sound measures.
It further notes efforts to diversify the economy by expanding fisheries and agriculture, addressing food-security challenges through firm policy, and action against illegal foreign workers and narcotics, as well as the president's international advocacy for Islam and Palestine. The party says a second term is warranted so that national development can continue without interruption. Under Article 88 of the PNC's basic rules, if a sitting party member in government seeks a second term, the ticket is awarded without a primary.
