Under the national project matching President Dr. Muizzu’s pledge to plant 5 million trees, more than 2 million trees have been planted so far, according to statistics from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
The ministry’s latest figures show that 2,040,866 trees have been planted to date under the programme. About 3 million more still need to be planted to reach the 5 million target.
Officials describe it as the largest tree-planting project undertaken in the Maldives so far, with strong support from government companies, institutions and private parties. Agencies and private parties have together pledged to plant 6.4 million trees under the project.
To expand and speed up the work nationwide, the Environment Ministry has given grants to 10 islands to set up tree nurseries. A “Green Nursery” is also being developed in Hulhumalé.
The national programme was launched last year on Environment Day to cut losses from climate change, restore disappearing vegetation and reduce the impacts of global warming. President Dr. Muizzu announced the project in his national statement at the COP28 high-level meeting in Dubai, UAE.
