President Dr. Muizzu has postponed until 1 June 2030 the ban on importing, producing and selling water packaged in plastic bottles of one litre or smaller.
He made the change on the advice of the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, amending the regulation that lists single-use plastic products harmful to the environment. A special regulation to that effect was issued today.
Under the previous rules, the ban on packaging water in bottles of between 500 millilitres and one litre was due to take effect from 1 December next year. With the amendment, that date has been pushed to 2030.
Meanwhile, importing, producing and placing on the market other prepared beverages — other than water — in plastic bottles smaller than 250 millilitres is banned with effect from today. The amendments have been published in the government gazette.
