The United States has cleared a possible $2.68 billion Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine for air defence development upgrades and related equipment, the State Department said in a congressional notification, as Russian strikes continue to strain Kyiv’s air defences.
The package, still subject to congressional review, includes S-300 Clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, range-extended laser-guided air defence rockets, launcher modification kits and RPS-202 counter-drone radars, along with maintenance, logistics and technical support. If concluded, Ukraine would finance the purchase with European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing appropriated under the prior administration, with that financing counted as a US capital contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund.
Washington said the proposed sale would strengthen Ukraine’s ability to conduct self-defence and regional security missions without altering the basic military balance in the region. The approval comes as Kyiv faces intensified Russian missile and drone attacks and amid wider US steps to pressure Moscow, including a Russia-Iran sanctions law signed this week.
According to Firstpost, citing the State Department notification, the principal contractors for the package would be chosen through competitive US government procurements.
