Home Minister Ali Ihusaan has said that the rate at which people drive vehicles while intoxicated has been increasing at an unusual rate, and that police are working on the issue with close attention.
Speaking at the “Ahaa” forum, the minister said serious accidents are occurring and lives are being lost because some people obtain driving licences without knowing traffic rules or before passing, and because of unusually fast driving on large, densely populated islands.

Ihusaan noted that, as a top priority, work is underway to establish traffic police services in Malé and the major cities in order to address the problem.
According to police statistics, more than 2,100 accidents have been reported so far this year.
