The number of Chinese tourists visiting the Maldives has risen above 300,000.
According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,603,021 tourists had visited the Maldives as of 30 September. China has sent the largest number of tourists to the Maldives so far this year. Arrivals from China alone stood at 300,977, highlighting China as an important market with a major share of Maldives tourism.
Russia ranked second with 229,236 tourist arrivals. The United Kingdom was third with 119,968 visitors. Tourists continue to arrive from various parts of the world, though arrivals so far this year are 3.4 percent lower than in the same period last year. Over the same period last year, 1,659,031 tourists visited the Maldives. In September alone this year, 148,801 tourists arrived, slightly lower than the 151,114 who arrived in September last year.
Looking at arrival gateways, most tourists so far have entered through Velana International Airport (VIA), the national gateway. VIA accounted for 1,569,214 arrivals, while 5,606 came via Gan International Airport and 15,583 arrived through seaports.
On accommodation, 1,158,404 tourists stayed at resorts. A further 345,220 stayed in guesthouses, while 36,106 stayed in hotels. The figures show that Maldives tourism continues to advance strongly and that the country remains one of the most popular destinations for travellers from many countries.
