The Criminal Court has concluded hearings in the embezzlement case against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom concerning R. Fuggiri, and scheduled the verdict for 11:00 on 29 October.
Judge Ali Nadheem concluded the hearings today after closing statements were delivered in the case.
Delivering its closing statement, Yameen's defence argued that the charges against him have no basis, and that questions arise over the credibility of the testimony given by Ahmed Adeeb and Abdulla Ziyath, who were presented as witnesses.
The defence also maintained that the money deposited into the account was obtained through the exchange of US dollars. The state, however, said the money was obtained by abusing the influence of his office, and asked the court to reject the dollar-exchange defence.
