President Dr. Muizzu has said the Maldives must embrace revolutionary changes that benefit the finances of the entire nation, in a way that does not undermine the country's independence and sovereignty. He made the remarks while speaking at the official Victory Day ceremony.
President Dr. Muizzu said the religion, independence and sovereignty of Maldivians can only be safeguarded by achieving economic independence. Just as our forefathers freed the nation from armed subjugation, the country must today be freed from the bondage of debt, he said.
Reflecting on lessons from history, the President said that behind every attack on the Maldives' independence were Maldivians driven by greed for power, while the martyrs had put the nation's independence and future first. He also assured that, in pursuing economic development, he would never act in a way that diminishes the Maldives' status as a 100 percent Muslim nation, or its independence and sovereignty.
The President further said that development is the right of every Maldivian, and that rather than merely watching progress around the world, everyone must work together to achieve the prosperity the people aspire to.
