The People's Majlis, where the ruling PNC holds a majority, has thrown out by a large margin a no-confidence motion submitted by opposition MDP members against Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed.
The motion, signed by 13 MDP members, was submitted to the Majlis on 3 August, raising questions over the failure to implement economic reforms, the dollar black market, and the way state funds and resources have been used. However, it was only taken up on the floor of the Majlis and debated at today's sitting, three months after it was submitted.
Minister Saeed attended today's sitting and responded to the points raised against him. He noted that over the past three years, the amount of dollars released to the public at the official rate has risen by 80 percent, and that 313 foreign investments have been registered, bringing in a record level of investment.
When the motion was put to a vote at the end of the debate, 54 of the 64 members who took part voted in confidence of Saeed. Only 10 members voted that they had no confidence in him.
Vote result:
- Total members voting: 64
- Voted in confidence (PNC/government): 54
- Voted no confidence (MDP/opposition): 10
With the result, the People's Majlis affirmed its confidence in Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and threw out the motion submitted by the MDP.
