Fenaka Corporation has transferred every island where it provided utility services to State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), completing the consolidation of that work under one company.
The decision to move electricity, water and sewerage services previously provided by Fenaka under STELCO was made by President Dr. Muizzu. The last island STELCO took over in connection with this change was Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll.
At a special ceremony held in Fonadhoo, STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar raised the national flag. The STELCO flag was raised by the company's South Regional Department General Manager Ahmed Sharuneez.
Speaking at the ceremony, Azwar said public expectations for these services have grown since STELCO took over island services. He highlighted that this is a very important and useful decision among the firm vision and far-sighted policies of President Dr. Muizzu, and thanked him. He also gave assurance that the company and its staff will work tirelessly to meet the public's expectations.
Before this, STELCO already provided services in the Greater Malé area as well as Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu and Vaavu atolls. Before the government decided to dissolve Fenaka, services in Baa, Lhaviyani and Meemu atolls had also been transferred to STELCO.
With today's change, utility services for the remaining 127 islands across the other atolls have been formally transferred to STELCO. To strengthen operations on those islands and bring services up to STELCO standards, changes are being made to the company's administrative structure, and a framework to run and oversee atoll engineering teams has begun to be put in place. Four STELCO teams in total have been active in the atolls on the practical work of bringing islands formerly served by Fenaka under the company.
