The Government of Maldives has agreed to host the Palestinian U-17 national football team for a training camp ahead of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup qualifiers, marking a significant gesture of sports solidarity and diplomatic support.
The decision was confirmed following a meeting on Tuesday between Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Ahmed Thorig and Minister of Sports and Health Abdullah Rafiu, where the logistics and expenses of the visit were discussed.
According to the Ministry of Sports, the initiative aims to strengthen bilateral ties between Maldives and Palestine, while also supporting the development of Palestinian sports amid ongoing regional instability.
The Palestinian team is scheduled to train in Maldives from November 8 to 19, in preparation for their Group D matches in the Asian Cup qualifiers, which will take place in India from November 22 to 30. The group also includes India, Iran, Chinese Taipei, and Lebanon.
FAM had previously reviewed the proposal from Palestine at its recent executive committee meeting and resolved to seek government support to cover the associated costs.
Due to the Israel-Palestine conflict, Palestinian teams face major hurdles in holding training camps or participating in international competitions on home soil, often relying on other nations for hosting and logistical support.
This move by the Maldivian government is seen as both a humanitarian and sporting gesture, reinforcing the Maldives’ support for Palestine during a time of crisis.
