Former President Abdulla Yameen has said the agreement under which the government entrusted a UAE company to carry out a large project in Rasmalé is not an agreement that must be upheld. The government recently signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi-based Eagle Hills for a USD 20 billion project to develop a waterfront and marina in Rasmalé.
Speaking at a PNF front office gathering, Yameen said what is being sold under the agreement is the people's future, and that it is not a mandate any government has been given under any law. He also said that because it is an illegal agreement, a future government would not be required to uphold it.
Yameen said Rasmalé is not an invention of President Dr. Muizzu, and that the concept itself is not his invention either. He also said the UAE company entrusted with running the project should know that the country's future cannot be sold in this way.
Under the agreement, the government says practical work will begin early next year on 5,000 housing units worth USD 500 million under Eagle Hills' plan. The project is also set to establish international-standard hotels and resorts, high-end residences, a marina, restaurants, shops, and centres dedicated to wellbeing.
