President Dr. Muizzu said that the closeness of countries is not measured by geography, but by sincere friendship between them.
He made the remarks while speaking at a special ceremony held in the Maldives to mark China's National Day. He noted that the ocean between the Maldives and China has never been a barrier to ties between the two countries. For centuries, he said, Indian Ocean routes have carried trade, culture, ideas and customs between the peoples of the two countries, forging a strong historical bond.
President Dr. Muizzu further said that while geography may determine where countries are located, history shows that closeness between nations is weighed by friendship. He said Maldives–China relations are built on mutual respect, sovereign equality and peaceful coexistence, as well as the Maldives' firm and sincere commitment to the One China principle.
He also noted that after his official visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, ties between the two countries were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership. That was not merely a change of name, he said, but a symbol of deep friendship and shared hopes for the future. Highlighting Chinese assistance for major projects in the Maldives and in education and technical training, he said the strength of the relationship is also measured by the real results delivered under signed agreements.
