Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply criticised a deal announced by US President Donald Trump to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports, after Russian strikes killed at least 15 people, including three children, in the city of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday.
“Today, Russia expressed its thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. Kyiv also suffered large-scale power outages after the overnight attacks, energy company DTEK said, while Zelenskyy said 13 other regions had been targeted.
Trump announced the agreement on Friday, saying it would help lower soaring fuel prices. It would suspend US sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 2027, allowing the staggered release of nearly two million tonnes of fuel onto world markets.
Zelenskyy called it “a weak decision by strong partners”, warning that revenue from Russian diesel sales means more money for Moscow’s war and could prolong the conflict.
