The Criminal Court has ordered Ali Jumaan, 25, of Kulhlhavahge, Haa Alif Baarah, to be held in custody for 12 days on suspicion of terrorism, over social media posts calling for buildings and vessels in the Maldives to be set on fire and for a shop to be looted.
Jumaan was arrested yesterday. The court extended his detention today.
In a post on X last Monday, Jumaan said people could not stand by and watch the government give land to Jews, and called for buildings and vessels to be set on fire to create unrest. In the same post, he also called for the looting of Redwave, the shop owned by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Saleem.
Separately, former MNDF First Lieutenant and former deputy minister in the current government Hassan Zihan has also been arrested over social media posts calling for the President's Office, the Parliament building and the Supreme Court to be set on fire. He has been remanded in custody for 15 days.
