Heavy rain that has fallen without a break since last night has flooded large parts of HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, causing serious damage to homes in the city, according to reports.
The rain began at around 10:30 pm last night and has continued since, while the relevant authorities are carrying out emergency relief work.
According to disaster management officials, water has entered more than 190 homes. Residents of some of the affected houses have been evacuated and are being moved to guesthouses.
The worst-hit areas are around the former atoll council office, Afeefuddin School and the official football ground. The Kulhudhuffushi community centre has been closed due to the flooding.
Kulhudhuffushi City Council, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), police and RDC are working together to drain the water. Pumps have been set up in five areas of the island, and a channel has been dug to the sea so the floodwater can drain away faster.
The council has asked anyone who needs help because of the flooding to call its hotline on 6527211. To help assess the damage, residents have been asked to take clear photos of any damage and share them with the council on Viber at 7221621.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast more heavy rain in the coming hours and has issued a yellow alert for the atolls from Haa Alif to Baa.
