A fire that broke out this morning at a fuel shed in the harbour area of Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll is still not under control, and has affected four houses and five workshops and garages in the area, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.
According to the NDMA, residents of houses in the area at greatest risk have been safely evacuated. The authority also noted that it has so far received no information of anyone being injured in the incident.
Police, Funadhoo Airport fire fighters and members of the public are working together to put out the fire, and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) fire team from Kulhudhuffushi has now also arrived on the island and joined the firefighting efforts.
Earlier, Funadhoo Council said the fire at the petrol shed had spread to two adjacent warehouses. The council said the wind was carrying the smoke and flames towards the inside of the island, and that the size of the fire was making it very difficult even to get close to the area. Some items were exploding inside the blaze, the council added.
