The United Nations must be a trustworthy and accountable institution that stands firm in its respect for international law, President Dr. Muizzu has said.
The President made the remarks in a special message issued to mark the 81st anniversary of the UN.
In his message, President Dr. Muizzu said the credibility of the UN rests on trust and accountability among nations, which can only be achieved through full respect for international law and principles and the fair implementation of treaties between countries. However, he noted that this trust is being eroded by growing geopolitical instability and the uneven application of the law.
The President said such divisions are causing unimaginable humanitarian losses, particularly in places such as Palestine. He also pointed out that small island developing states (SIDS) face major obstacles to progress due to unequal access to financial assistance and technology, and to unsustainable debt.
President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the importance of the Maldives having the means it needs to achieve its goal of becoming a developed country by 2040, while retaining the independence to determine its own future. He said the country must have the opportunity to invest in the progress of its people, strengthen its economy and respond resiliently to external challenges.
The President called on the UN to remain a body that respects the rights of all states and ensures that no nation's future is determined by the influence of another. He concluded his message by assuring that the Maldives will work steadfastly with the international community to establish peace and justice in the world.
