The Criminal Court has today sentenced Mariyam Dheena, former procurement head of Fenaka Corporation, to one year and seven months in prison in a corruption case involving the company.
The sentence follows the court's finding that the state had proved a charge of abuse of official position against Dheena, in a case concerning payments released under a 2019 agreement between Fenaka and Blazon Inc without verifying that the contracted work had been completed.
At today's hearing, the state requested the basic sentence for the offence, noting that Dheena is a single mother caring for her children and did not receive any significant direct benefit. Although the defence asked for the sentence to be changed to a fine or house arrest, Judge Adam Mohamed, who presided over the case, decided to impose a prison sentence as there was no medical document stating that she could not be held in prison.
Former Fenaka Managing Director Ahmed Saeed was previously sentenced to four years in prison in the same case. Dheena also faces corruption charges in a separate case concerning a contract awarded to Keiretsu Private Limited for camera systems.
