The Criminal Court has postponed the verdict in the cases against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is charged with accepting a USD 1 million bribe in connection with the lease of R. Fuggiri and laundering the money.
When concluding the hearings, presiding Judge Ali Nadheem had announced that the verdict would be delivered tomorrow. However, the case was not among those the Criminal Court scheduled for tomorrow, and the defence lawyers have also been informed that no hearing will be held. The court has not disclosed any specific reason for postponing the verdict hearing.
Yameen has denied all the bribery and money laundering charges brought by the state. At the hearing for closing statements, he also said the cases were baseless and politically motivated.
In addition to Yameen, charges in the Fuggiri case were also filed against Ahmed Riza, known as Crick Riza, of M. Kurikeelahiyaa, and the companies Sun Construction and Engineering and Sun Investment. The state later withdrew the charges against Riza, and the court ruled that the charges against the two Sun companies were not proven.
