The People's Majlis Finance Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved increasing the Chief Justice's benefits, raising the salary to more than MVR 95,000.
At the committee meeting, Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh proposed that, in line with the changes made to state salaries, the Chief Justice should also receive the same salary as the Speaker of the People's Majlis.
Accordingly, with the committee's approval of a special allowance of MVR 4,125 for the Chief Justice, who currently receives a salary of MVR 91,000, the Chief Justice's total salary will rise to MVR 95,125.
The Finance Committee last Wednesday approved raising the Speaker's salary to MVR 95,125.
The decision to add MVR 22,000 to the Speaker's allowance, made because the Speaker does not receive the committee allowance and there was a resulting pay gap, drew criticism of the government, and an urgent motion was also submitted to the Majlis over the matter. However, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla returned the motion, saying it did not meet the required conditions.
