President Dr. Muizzu has announced that the Malé City Group of Hospitals will be dissolved and replaced by a new group, "Maldives Tertiary Hospitals", which will bring together all government tertiary hospitals across the country.
Speaking on the state media programme "Nation Chat", President Dr. Muizzu said strengthening the health sector is one of the government's top policy priorities, and that it will also be given special priority in next year's budget.
He said the system under which hospitals in Malé are currently organised into a single group will be expanded, linking all tertiary hospitals in the Maldives, as well as hospitals designated to be upgraded to tertiary level, into one network.
With this change, duplication in the health sector will be eliminated, resources will be shared between hospitals, and doctors' specialist services can be more easily used from one facility to another.
President Dr. Muizzu said the new system will be established within three to four months starting from November, and that the project will not involve hiring additional staff.
In addition, the arrangement is expected to ensure that the government makes full use of doctors who studied at state expense, and that highly qualified foreign specialist doctors can be stationed in the Maldives to provide services in specialised fields.
