The Criminal Court has sentenced a former chief manager at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and a fuel bowser driver to more than eight years in prison for embezzling 783,100 litres of diesel owed to the company, and ordered them to repay MVR 6.7 million to the state.
The court found MPL's procurement department chief manager Mohamed Aiman, of Vaaruge, S. Feydhoo, and Sojib, a Bangladeshi national who drove a fuel bowser for Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM), guilty of embezzlement and of creating false documents.
Both men were sentenced to eight years, nine months and 18 days in prison. The court also ordered them to pay the state MVR 6.7 million, the value of the embezzled fuel.
According to MPL figures, between January and October 2020, 119 delivery notes were processed through the system showing that MPL had received 783,100 litres of diesel that it never received. Through the preparation and signing of those delivery notes, MVR 6.7 million was paid to FSM.
The relevant authorities have been taking firm measures to stop major corruption and embezzlement cases of this kind.
