Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation show that more than 1.2 million tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year. According to the latest data released by the Ministry, a total of 1,229,419 tourists have arrived this year, representing a 4.5 percent decrease compared to the 1,287,850 tourist arrivals recorded during the same period last year. Additionally, 159,537 tourists have visited so far in the ongoing month of July, which is a 1.3 percent decline compared to the same period in July last year.
The primary reason for the decline in tourist numbers compared to last year is the temporary suspension of flights by several airlines due to the conflict in the Middle East. However, with these airlines resuming operations, the Maldives currently welcomes an average of 5,911 tourists daily. The top five source markets for tourist arrivals to the Maldives are China (210,109 tourists), Russia (175,814 tourists), the United Kingdom (96,179 tourists), Italy (78,982 tourists), and Germany (75,550 tourists).
Of the tourists who entered the Maldives, 1,213,842 traveled by air, with the majority entering through Velana International Airport (1,199,442 tourists). The second-highest number of tourists entered through Gan International Airport (4,475 tourists). While 2.2 million tourists visited the Maldives last year, the Minister of Tourism has assured that the total number of arrivals by the end of this year will not fall below last year's figures.
