The People's National Congress (PNC) has awarded its 2028 presidential ticket to President Dr. Muizzu to contest a second term, without holding a primary.
The ticket was presented at the closing session of the PNC congress at the Social Centre by Speaker of Parliament and party chairperson Abdulla Rahim Abdullah.
Congress members unanimously approved awarding the ticket without a primary, with 1,119 members present. Under the PNC constitution, if a party member who holds the presidency seeks a second term, the ticket may be awarded without a primary.
The decision cites recognition of President Dr. Muizzu's work for the country's independence, the economy and social well-being as the basis for awarding the ticket.
Former president Abdulla Yameen has already announced he will contest the election. Leading figures in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) — former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Abdullah Shahid, Fayyaz Ismail and MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed — are also signalling interest in the 2028 presidential race.
