Maldives Gas, a subsidiary of State Trading Organization (STO), has decided to limit the amount of cooking gas filled into cylinders from next Friday, citing rising prices on world markets and difficulties importing gas into the Maldives.
In a statement issued today, the company said temporary changes to fill amounts would be introduced to keep service uninterrupted. Under the new limits:
- 10 kg cylinders will be filled with 7 kg
- 22 kg cylinders will be filled with 14 kg
- 45 kg cylinders will be filled with 31 kg
Maldives Gas said the price of cooking gas will not rise substantially with the change, and that customers will pay only for the weight of gas actually filled into their cylinders.
As a permanent solution, the company said a project is underway to increase gas storage capacity in the Maldives. Once completed, about three months' worth of gas will be able to be stored at once.
Gas availability was also constrained in March after the Middle East war began, and sales were limited then as well.
