State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation (State Pharma) has initiated efforts to ensure the easy availability of all ranges of antibiotics in the Maldives.
According to Dr. Shah Mahir, one of the most serious global issues is antibiotic resistance, where illnesses become resistant to treatment. Extensive technical work is currently underway in collaboration with all stakeholders in the health sector to find a sustainable solution to this problem.
To address medicine-related issues in the Maldives, State Pharma is working to establish a system for proactively procuring medicines in bulk according to the population's needs and to detect when stock levels are low. Furthermore, a long-term forecast is planned, with provisions to import a 1 to 2-year supply of medication in advance.
State Pharma is a company established in September of last year by a special decree from the President. Effective July 1st of this year, all pharmacies and employees previously operating across the Maldives under STO have been officially transferred to State Pharma, and operations have commenced.
"While medicines unavailable in the Maldives were previously ordered on prescription, a proactive forecast will be created for the country's medication needs, and a 1 to 2-year supply will be imported in advance," said Dr. Shah Mahir.
