As part of the project to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi, the development of both international and domestic ports in Thilafushi has been entrusted to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
During a ceremony held at the MPL Head Office, the agreement was signed by MPL's CEO, Hussain Shafeeq, and CHEC's Country Manager, Mao Bao.
Under this agreement, a 14.6-meter-deep and 375-meter-long quay wall will be developed specifically for international cargo container vessels. Furthermore, a 5-meter-deep and 820-meter-long domestic quay wall is planned for vessels used in inter-atoll transport. Some phases of this project (including a 100-meter quay wall and paving a 3-hectare area) were previously awarded to MTCC on June 1st.
Upon the full completion of this project, an international quay wall extending over 1,000 meters and a domestic terminal spanning over 2,000 meters will be developed. The government aims to conclude the entire project by November 11th of next year.
The relocation of the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi is a presidential pledge by Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Designed to cater to the next 30 years, this new port will offer a permanent solution to the congestion currently faced at the Malé port. Once the new port is operational, the Maafannu port will be repurposed for other government needs. It is anticipated that the current five-day period for cargo unloading and clearance will be reduced to 48 hours (two days), greatly facilitating businesses.
