President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today appointed Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur (Azee), who previously served as State Minister at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, as Information Commissioner.
The letter of appointment was handed to Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur at a special ceremony held at the President's Office today.
His appointment follows the People's Majlis approving his nomination after the President submitted his name for parliamentary consent. The Majlis Committee on Independent Institutions reviewed the matter, after which Parliament voted to approve his appointment to the post.
Until his appointment, Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur served as State Minister at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage. He is also a figure who has served for many years in Dhivehi literature and the media, and has held senior positions in the Maldivian state.
The Information Commissioner post became vacant following the end of the previous office-holder's term. The Office of the Information Commissioner, established under the Right to Information Act, is an institution responsible for overseeing disclosure of information by state agencies and ensuring citizens' right to access information.
With the newly appointed Information Commissioner, efforts to strengthen the system for disclosure of information by state agencies and to provide information to the public are expected to become more active.
