BRICS leaders meeting in New Delhi on Saturday adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026 on the opening day of the 18th BRICS Summit. Member states also condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack in the strongest terms and reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance on terrorism in all its forms.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said talks at the summit showed that a changing world could not be steered by outdated institutions, and that the Global South must have equal participation in global decision-making and in shaping the rules for future technologies.
The joint statement followed days of difficult negotiations between members on opposite sides of the West Asia conflict, including Iran and the United Arab Emirates. The crisis has overshadowed the summit, with Russia and China on one side and the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt on the other, as Houthi advances in Yemen have intensified pressure on Red Sea shipping routes.
