The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) today officially opened its supreme council, or Congress, at the Social Centre. The Congress, which runs from today through Friday, was inaugurated by the party’s president and President Dr. Muizzu.
To take part, presidents of councils represented by the party, chairs of women’s development committees, and a large number of delegates have arrived in Malé. Ahead of the opening, President Dr. Muizzu and People’s Majlis Speaker and PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla met the delegates yesterday.
Among the important decisions to be taken at the Congress that began today is the election of PNC deputy presidents. Candidates for the deputy president posts include current office-holders Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Local Government Authority (LGA) CEO Mohamed Nimal, government Chief Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef, and Baarah constituency MP Ibrahim Shujaau. Also contesting are Maafannu Medhu constituency MP Asma Rasheed, Nilandhoo constituency MP Fathimath Sauda, and Youth Minister Abdullah Rafi.
Among political parties in the Maldives, PNC has the largest membership. Elections Commission records show 67,579 members, while the party says membership has surpassed 70,000.
