Two Maldivians have been arrested with a large quantity of narcotics in a special operation conducted by the Metropolitan Police Division in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.
The two men arrested on Monday are 46-year-old Ali Rasheed and 34-year-old Mohamed Visam. According to Thai media reports, they were arrested in an operation launched after a cargo office in Bangkok's Pratunam area reported to police that parcels sent to the office could contain drugs.
As the parcels gave off a foul smell, the cargo office did not accept them, and the items were taken to a room in the Sukhumvit area where the two men were staying. When police searched the room and the parcels, they seized 2.37 kilograms of crystal meth (ice) and about 10 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside thermoses and children's clothing.
Thai police said the two men were part of a group running a large drug network. However, during questioning they denied the charges, saying the items were sent for cargo at the request of a friend and that they did not know the parcels contained drugs. Thai police are continuing their investigation to determine whether others were involved.
