Practical work on developing an international airport in GA. Villingili will begin with a new contractor before the end of November, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said.
Speaking at the “Aha” forum held at Sultan Park, Minister Ameen said the contractor for the airport development project has been changed, and work is now under way on the final stage before on-site work begins.
Reclaiming land in Villingili and developing an international airport there is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Muizzu. The project includes plans for a 2.2-kilometre runway, a transit hotel, high-end resorts and a yacht marina.
Although a memorandum of understanding for the investment, valued at between US$500 million and US$750 million, was signed in February 2024, work on the project had stalled for various reasons.
