NATO's top military commander, US General Alexus Grynkewich, has said the alliance is "ready to fight tonight" if it is attacked, as European capitals grow increasingly uneasy about Russia's shadow campaign across the continent.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, Grynkewich, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said he does not consider a conflict with Russia imminent or inevitable. But he warned that any attack would be futile, setting out a three-step "block, blunt and break" plan he called NATO's "theory of victory": block an initial assault, blunt any continuing advance, and if required break the enemy forces and the systems that support and sustain them.
He also said NATO would not seize Russian territory under any response scenario, and insisted the United States remains committed to the alliance, pointing to thousands of American troops deployed along NATO's eastern flank.
The remarks come amid a string of incidents European governments have blamed on Moscow, including an alleged plot to blow up a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig airport cited by Germany, an arson attack on a defence company in Estonia, and what the UK described as a foiled plot targeting a drone facility near London.
