The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other relevant agencies have begun providing emergency assistance after homes and businesses in Malé were reported flooded following heavy rain.
According to the NDMA, water entered 21 houses, 16 shops, two restaurants, two clinics and four government buildings in Malé during last night's rain.
A case of sewage leaking from a house as a result of the flooding has also been reported.
To bring the flooding under control quickly, pumps have been set up in 10 key areas of Malé to drain the water. Work is also under way to place sandbags to protect affected households, and 10,000 sacks have so far been handed over to the Malé City Council to prepare sandbags.
The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service, the Maldives Police Service, the Maldivian Red Crescent, the Malé City Council, MTCC and HDC are working together across a wide area to provide assistance during the emergency.
