US President Donald Trump spoke on Friday with Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as part of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and end the US-Iran war, according to the emir's office.
The Amiri Diwan said the leaders discussed Qatar-led mediation aimed at easing tensions. Sheikh Tamim stressed the need for sustained dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes and prevent further escalation. The call came amid a flurry of contacts that have also included Iran's top diplomat speaking with Gulf counterparts.
The conversation followed Trump's confirmation earlier this week that US forces struck an anti-aircraft facility Iran had built — an operation he described as a "minor attack". US media had reported strikes linked to Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. An Israeli military spokesperson told AFP that Israel was not involved.
Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran was "ready for battle", while President Masoud Pezeshkian said his government still sought a resolution through dialogue and that no one would benefit if the war reignited. The conflict began in February with a wave of US and Israeli strikes on Iran and has remained largely stalemated for months.
