The Maldives has once again called on the international stage for an immediate halt to all efforts by Israel to illegally seize Palestinian lands.
The Maldives made this call at the "Conference on the Question of Jerusalem" held today in Cairo. The conference was held under the theme "Jerusalem: The Frontline of Displacement and Annexation and the Key to Just and Lasting Peace" and was organized jointly by the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
At this conference, the Maldives was represented by the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the OIC and Ambassador of the Maldives to Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Sareer.
In his address, Ambassador Sareer highlighted the desperate situation of the Palestinian people caused by Israel's colonial practices in violation of international law and the rulings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Additionally, the Maldives acknowledged the work of UNRWA — the UN agency providing assistance to Palestinian refugees — and called on the international community to increase support to help the agency overcome the financial difficulties it faces.
The Maldives' statement further noted that the legal, historical, and religious status of Jerusalem's holy sites can only be protected by bringing a permanent end to Israel's occupation. The Maldives also stated that lasting peace in the region cannot be achieved without granting the Palestinian people the right to establish an independent sovereign state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the pre-1967 borders. The CEIRPP, established in 1975, is an important committee advocating for Palestinian rights, and the Maldives has always been one of the strongest voices for Palestinian independence.
