The United States military has launched a new wave of airstrikes against Iran in retaliation for an Iranian missile attack on a US base in Jordan that killed two American soldiers and left one missing.
In a statement, US Central Command said the consecutive strikes carried out on the eighth night were swift punishment targeting Iran Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), also aimed at deterring Iranian threats against vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian missile attack on Friday targeted the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, killing two US service members and hospitalizing four others, with one still missing. This marks the first time US soldiers have been killed by a direct Iranian attack since the US-Israel war against Iran began on February 28, 2026. The total number of US soldiers killed in the conflict has now reached 16.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that operations against Iran would intensify in light of the sacrifice made by the fallen soldiers.
The latest US strikes targeted the Sirik area in Iran Hormozgan province, Qeshm Island, and the Shadegan area in Khuzestan province. Iranian state media reported no casualties from the strikes. However, with the US continuing to bomb critical Iranian infrastructure, the country power grid has come under significant strain, prompting Iran Energy Ministry to urge citizens to reduce electricity consumption.
In response to the US strikes, Iran new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei warned that if the US does not cease its attacks on Iran, it would be taught a lesson it will never forget. Additionally, Iran Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran is no longer abiding by the temporary peace agreement reached between the two countries about a month ago, as the US had violated its terms. With this decision, hopes for peace between the two sides have collapsed, plunging the entire region deeper into a major war.
